13-year-old Thomas Code joined Youth Central this Fall when his mother began working with Kids up Front Calgary. His primary involvement is with the Calgary Youth Foundation, where he is part of a committee of youth who spread the message of philanthropy and grant funds to youth-initiated projects.

Why did you begin volunteering with us?

I began volunteering with Youth Central because I felt that I needed to contribute and give back to Calgary. It seemed like a responsibility that I should take on in order to make Calgary the best city that It could be.

What is your favourite part about it?

My favourite part about volunteering with Youth Central is interacting with new people, and learning from my volunteer experiences. It provides me with so much valuable experience for the future, and allows me to further the development of the community.

What do you get out of volunteering?

What I learn and receive from volunteering is very much associated with my favourite parts of my experience with Youth Central. Whenever I participate and engage in the volunteer process, I am directly impacting an aspect of the city. This is such a positive environment for youth to be involved, in my opinion.

Do you have any specific goals when it comes to volunteering?

I have numerous goals that I aspire to achieve, including engaging in environmental volunteer opportunities every year, and making sure that I am always participating with Youth Central in a way that positively impacts the less fortunate citizens of Calgary.

What might you say to any peers thinking of getting involved?

Many people I know within my school volunteer with Youth Central already, and I would encourage my peers to continue to be involved with Youth Central. I would say that the time in which I have been involved here has been filled with amazing opportunities for me to take action on issues which might impact youth, and of course I would say to anyone interested that volunteering with Youth Central is an extremely positive experience.
