Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) began in 1987 as a summer service program for Kansas City youth. Today, YVC is a network of affiliated organizations across the U.S. and Canada running that same program. Youth Central’s YVC program started in 1993, and has grown to be YVC’s largest affiliate. Youth Central collaborates with over 100 organizations in Calgary to create hundreds of youth-approved service opportunities year-round for youth volunteers. The focus of each volunteer opportunity is to create meaningful, educational and engaging projects that address a wide variety of community needs while providing thoughtful leadership opportunities.
Much like our Youth Volunteer Corps Program, our Youth Volunteer Corps School Clubs program provides guidance to schools and community organizations in the creation of their own volunteer clubs. Club meetings are led by our Education Coordinator and typically take place during the lunch hour, or after school. School clubs will have the opportunity to volunteer both within their school or organization and can also take on projects with our general Youth Volunteer Corps. The scope of the program is city-wide, encompassing junior and senior high schools in the Calgary Board of Education, Calgary Catholic School District, and private and charter schools. The program works with teachers or other school personnel to offer volunteer opportunities that complement the curriculum and student interests.
