Kevin was a volunteer on the Mayor\u2019s Youth Council (MYC) in 2011 and the following year joined the staff as a Team Lead on projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"><br \/>\n <a href=\"http:\/\/youthcentral.com\/annualreport\/annualreport\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/01\/kevin.capuno2-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/youthcentral.com\/annualreport\/annualreport\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/01\/kevin.capuno2-2.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-22806\" srcset=\"https:\/\/youthcentral.com\/annualreport\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/01\/kevin.capuno2-2.jpg 960w, https:\/\/youthcentral.com\/annualreport\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/01\/kevin.capuno2-2-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/youthcentral.com\/annualreport\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/01\/kevin.capuno2-2-768x510.jpg 768w, https:\/\/youthcentral.com\/annualreport\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/01\/kevin.capuno2-2-700x465.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u201cI had these ideas for contributing to the community but not necessarily an outlet to do so,\u201d Kevin says. \u201cWhen I heard about MYC, it was so intriguing because you\u2019d have the ability to talk with other youth all over the city. Being able to contribute to the city was really neat.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n<div style=\"height: 12px;\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Kevin graduated from Father Lacombe High school in 2012. He is in his last year at the University of Calgary completing the urban studies program and development studies program. Kevin is looking to apply to grad schools in the fall for city planning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Kevin\u2019s experience with the MYC committee helped to influence what he studied in university. \u201cI started being curious about city life, social interactions, how public space works, roads, and accessible transportation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">At the U of C, Kevin started an annual race, Outrun The Stigma, aimed to help raise awareness about mental health and mental health resources in 2012. After celebrating its fourth annual race last year, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.outrunthestigma.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Outrun The Stigma<\/a>, transitioned into a not-for-profit this past year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">In total, they have raised over $25,000 for mental health supports in Calgary. They are hoping to expand the race to other campuses across Canada. Kevin has been able to draw on his experiences volunteering and working at Youth Central to help with this project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cAs a Team Leader, you\u2019re essentially an event coordinator on-site for those special projects. So something that really helped me with this not-for-profit is understanding all of the logistical things that go into a really big event.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">Being involved with Youth Central as a Team Leader provided Kevin the opportunity to watch the evolution of volunteers, programs, and ideas from his own volunteer days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cWhen I was on MYC, we planned the first youth volunteer fair and we got different organizations to talk about different opportunities for youth. It\u2019s been so interesting to see how other councils <a href=\"http:\/\/youthcentral.com\/annualreport\/annualreport\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/01\/kevin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/youthcentral.com\/annualreport\/annualreport\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/01\/kevin.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"496\" class=\"alignright wp-image-22807\" srcset=\"https:\/\/youthcentral.com\/annualreport\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/01\/kevin.jpg 603w, https:\/\/youthcentral.com\/annualreport\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/01\/kevin-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/youthcentral.com\/annualreport\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/01\/kevin-300x298.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>have transformed that idea over the years,\u201d Kevin says. \u201cAnd now I\u2019m in my fifth year of team leading, and seeing the youth who were 12 or 13 in my first year, getting ready to go to university is so rewarding.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"><br \/>\n Kevin has only one piece of advice for youth volunteers: <em>seize the opportunities. <\/em><\/p>\n<p> \u201cAs a youth, we have the room to make mistakes \u2013 understand that\u2019s okay. There\u2019s still all of this room and time to grow and develop. Seizing those opportunities helps you put your best foot forward.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n<div style=\"height: 12px;\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">This past summer, Kevin earned the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee scholarship and travelled to Ghana. In Ghana, Kevin worked with a local organization that was working towards disability rights and disability advocacy in the local community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cI was also doing a self-directed research project on health care and how that exists in notions of urban and rural. [The research] went really well, I had the ability to present. I\u2019m hoping to get my paper published by the end of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cYouth Central has become a home for the last couple of years. It\u2019s been so special to know that I\u2019ll always have a base here in Calgary because of Youth Central.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>\n Youth Central is happy to celebrate its 25 years in the community and there will be more ways to celebrate with us later this year!
