Youth Central’s Neighbour Day activities

The City of Calgary is inviting you to remember last year’s flood while celebrating the spirit of our city and the kindness of Calgarians. They have officially declared Saturday, June 21 as Neighbour Day, where you can get to know your community by saying hello, lending a hand with a project or even throwing a block party.

This is something that Youth Central can definitely get behind. We support the incredible youth in our city who want to volunteer, but might not know how. All year long, we grow young people’s understanding of their community, giving them a sense of belonging, perspective and pride in our city.

This Neighbour Day, our Youth Volunteer Corps program, part of the Calgary AfterSchool initiative, is engaging youth in several community events. Here are two of the highlights:

Haysboro Community Parade:

Project Description:

“Our goal is to get the community excited about our upcoming natural playground project (we will reveal the design during the opening ceremonies), encourage volunteerism, increasing community spirit, and having young to old outside to play.  We are tying into the Longest Day of Play, a ParticipACTION initiative that ties the Summer solstice’s longest day of sunlight into the longest day of play.  This is an all-inclusive community celebration we expect over 30 interest groups from the community to be involved in the parade and to have a large portion of our 7000 residents participating.  As a society that suffers from ‘Nature Deficit Disorder’, we need to do our best to promote getting outside, playing as a community, and valuing great neighbourhood gathering spaces. When you build more community, you build more love!”

Youth Volunteer Tasks:

  • Lead their groups into the parade (5 p.m.) in a predetermined order
  • Help lead sports demos like soccer, basketball, ball hockey, kick ball, lawn bowling, old-fashioned games like 3-legged races, spoon races, potato sack races etc following the parade

WinSport All Sport Day:
