Calgary Youth Foundation Grant Recipient in Profile: Warrior Outdoor Classroom

There’s a unique kind of classroom in the works for students at St. Michael School.

Thanks to $2,000 from the Calgary Youth Fouundation and $1,000 from the Jack Leslie Youth Environment Grant, the school is planning an outdoor classroom which will provide a healthy place to play, learn and develop a genuine respect for nature. The idea came from Grade 9 leadership students.

“This grant is imperative in allowing the students to see that hard work and determination pays off in results that leave lasting impacts,” says teacher Nadia Verna. “It also allows students to use their own voice in planning activities and projects within the school, giving them opportunity to be invested in the change that occurs in the community.”

Planning the project will take most of the fall, with implementation beginning in spring 2015. St. Michael School plans to unveil the classrom and celebrate in June 2015.
