Program in Profile: Youth Volunteer Corps in Schools

The Youth Volunteer Corps in Schools program is driven by students in 19 schools, where all projects are a direct reflection of the youth’s interests, ideas and passions. Some of the projects orchestrated this past academic school year included: organizing a video game tournament with proceeds going to an orphanage in Zambia; making sandwiches on a monthly basis in support of the Alex Centre and Calgary Drop In and Rehab Centre; and participating in Ronald McDonald House® Southern Alberta and Make-A-Wish® Southern Alberta Hair Massacure, a unique hair colouring and head shaving event, were volunteers shave or donate their hair helping to raise over $8,000 towards children suffering from life threatening illnesses.
 
Interesting Fact: The total number of volunteer hours accumulated by the Youth Volunteer Corps in Schools program during the 2013-2014 school year was over 17,000 hours!
