Holiday Volunteer Opportunities

The holidays are one of the busiest times at Youth Central – we have over 100 volunteer projects in December alone! What better time to get involved and give back to the community by volunteering? We have opportunities for all youth:

If you want to experience a holiday festival

  • Zoolights is a Calgary favourite during the holidays. The Calgary Zoo is illuminated with over 1.5 million lights. Volunteers will join in the festivities by helping lead outdoor activities and games — make sure to dress warm!
  • Take a step back in time this holiday at Heritage Park’s “Once Upon a Christmas.” Volunteers are needed to help children with holiday crafts, play in the family fun zone, help out in the candy store and lots of other more activities.

If you are interested in volunteering with seniors

  • The “Youth Central Elves” will be carolling at a number of senior’s residences throughout Calgary this season. Bring your best singing voice and help spread Christmas cheer!

If you enjoy arts & theatre

  • The Alberta Ballet presents “The Nutcracker” on various dates & times in the days coming up to Christmas. Volunteers are needed to help with the “Sugar Plum Parties” prior to the performance; helping children with crafts, colouring & dress up, and providing support during intermission and post-performance. (*Please note volunteers must be 16 years or older to volunteer for this project.)

If you want to spread holiday cheer

  • The “Wrap It Up” fundraiser needs volunteers to help wrap gifts in malls around Calgary.
  • Brown Bagging For Calgary Kids is looking for volunteers to help bake & decorate holiday cookies for the lunches they make for students who would otherwise go hungry.
  • Not everyone can afford Christmas – that’s why The Salvation Army puts on Toy Mountain. Volunteers are needed to help put together Christmas hampers for less fortunate families.
  • The annual Calgary Dream Centre Christmas Party is another great way to give back – volunteers will help serve dinner to residents, assist with gift giving and clean up.

If you like working with kids

  • WinSport hosts a number of Christmasville events, which are corporate children’s Christmas parties. Profits from the Christmasvilles goes back into the organization and allows WinSport to provide excellent facilities for Olympic Athletes to train and kids to engage in sports. Volunteers will help set-up/set-down, supervise the ball pit, bouncy house, run the craft station, assist with Wii games, games and activities, and help clear tables.
  • The Richmond Community Association is running a Learn to Skate program after Christmas. Skate with Kids is a great opportunity for anyone with a pair of skates & some experience on ice! Help children tie up their skates and improve their skating skills.
