Youth Central is celebrating its 25th anniversary!
To mark this milestone Youth Central is profiling 25 of its alumni throughout the years. Youth Central’s Youth Are Awesome (YAA) program is helping out by interviewing and profiling the alumni. This article is written by Malika Daya, one of YAA junior editors.
Our next alumni profile is a man whose story is one of innovation, creativity, and leadership. Walter Pang, is one of the 25 esteemed alumni being interviewed to celebrate Youth Central’s 25 Anniversary.
Walter was involved with Youth Central from 2007 – 2010. His contribution to Youth Central has created a legacy that continues to add value and purpose to the lives of many youths volunteering with Youth Central today.
One of youth Central’s steering committees, TD Youth Earth Ambassadors (YEA), was rooted in an initiative Walter and his friends created at Sir Winston Churchill High School. With the support of Youth Central staff, this environmental initiative was extended to all Calgary youth. Every year, YEA continues to take steps forward in bettering Calgary’s environment, through raising awareness, hosting e-recycling events, and innovating new solutions to current problems. Walter’s contribution has left a rippling effect on him, as youth continue to follow in his footsteps attempting to innovate and take action to create sustainable change.
After graduating high school, Walter studied at Queen’s University where he took advantage of the plethora of opportunity to enhance student’s experiences in Queens. He helped by innovating and instituting Queen’s University Business Engagement (QUBE) and Queen’s Case Competition Union (QCCU).
QUBE is a student outreach program aiming to better assist first-year students to integrate into university. The program provides first years in commerce with the right tools and tips to survive and thrives in their program with information on specializing, exchanges, frosh tips, and general advice. QCCU on the other hand is dedicated to providing business students access to compete internationally with other university teams. The Case Team has travelled far and wide, competing and ranking first in various events in Norway, Netherlands, Thailand, and so forth. A handful of students have been fortunate to be a part of such an elite experience, learning about commerce, the world, and themselves in the process.
Walter also was a Chair for CREO Solutions, “student consulting arm focused on non-profit and for-profit consulting engagements” hiring the brightest commerce students to be a part of the team. CREO has been a part of projects like the Waste Diversion Program in Kingston, a four-year transformation, where the company played a huge hand in the success and sustainability of the non-profit.
Walter’s contributions to the commerce program at Queens University and the community he lives in, leave an impact on those to come, providing them with opportunities to be a part of such a delicate process of development in the world we live in.
Currently, Walter works for the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, helping invest funds on behalf of 20 million contributors and beneficiaries. It is not an understatement to say that, with everything Walter has done, he has strived for innovation and excellence. And in that innovation and excellence, he has left a legacy that is one to learn from and be inspired by.
