How can you empower youth through event planning?

From a young age, Emerson sought an outlet for their interests and talents, eventually finding their calling within the Youth of Distinction Awards program at Youth Central. In this interview, Emerson shares their experiences, motivations, and the profound impact volunteering has had on their life and the community.

Finding Purpose Through Volunteering

Emerson’s journey with Youth Central began when they were just eleven years old and  searching for a meaningful extracurricular activity. Introduced to the Youth of Distinction Awards committee by their mother, Emerson found a place to direct their passion for event planning while connecting with their community.  Emerson recalls, “At first, it was personal motivation to help plan a large event, and then after you see the outcome of it and how people are affected by all of your effort – that is the best.”

Growth and Confidence as a Senior Volunteer

Over the years, Emerson’s role evolved from a novice committee member to a seasoned senior volunteer. Initially, they grappled with self-doubt and uncertainty, but as they gained experience and knowledge, their confidence soared. “The more you know about things, the more confident you’ll be,” Emerson reflects. “You don’t question yourself so much after you’ve been through it and you know what you’re doing.”

Expanding Horizons and Building Skills

Volunteering with Youth Central provided Emerson with invaluable opportunities for personal and professional growth. They honed their event planning skills, learned to navigate diverse perspectives, and gained insights into community issues. Emerson emphasizes, “I’ve been able to see more perspectives on the world… My perspective is broader.”

Making a Lasting Impact

For Emerson, volunteering  has become a constant in their life, offering stability, learning, and fulfillment. Reflecting on their impact, Emerson hopes to inspire recognition and appreciation for youth achievements and encourage diverse voices within the program. “I hope there’s people out there from the committee who feel comfortable coming forward with their opinion and not just riding that wave that everyone else is riding,” Emerson shares.

Emerson underscores the significance of Youth Central’s leadership programs  in providing unique opportunities for youth development. “There is no other event planning opportunity for 12 year olds. This is something that I wanted and this is where I found it,” they express.
