12 Jun Youth Vaping Trends Revealed in New Calgary Report
A recent survey by the Mayor’s Youth Council sheds light on the rates of vaping among Calgary’s youth. The study, which polled 168 young people in Calgary, found that nearly half of those who vape, had tried it by the age of 14. This underscores the urgent need for early education and intervention to address the growing youth vaping epidemic.
The research, unveiled at a press conference at City Hall on June 13, 2024, also highlighted the critical role peers play in shaping youth attitudes and behaviors around vaping. A concerning finding is that 30% of youth who vape reported using it as a coping mechanism for stress and anxiety, issues that are increasingly prevalent among young people today.
Empowering Youth to Drive Change
“By leading this peer-to-peer research, youth are taking a key step in addressing a problem that is impacting their own lives and communities,” said Mayor Gondek. “We know that youth are more likely to confide in their peers, and by empowering them to take action, we can create real change.”
Gemma, a representative from the Mayor’s Youth Council, echoed the Mayor’s sentiments. “It’s great to have this opportunity to draw attention to an issue that affects us and our peers every day. This survey has given valuable insights into the realities of youth vaping, and we want to use this information to make a positive difference.”
