19 Nov From Uncertainty to Confidence: Emerson’s Story
from feeling unsure to becoming a confident leader on the Youth of Distinction Awards committee.
Emerson’s journey with the Youth of Distinction Awards (YODA) committee began at age 11, driven by a budding interest in event planning. “I had tried martial arts, dance, drama, singing—none of them were the right fit. My mom suggested YODA, and I decided to give it a try.”
At first, Emerson’s motivation was to plan a big event. Over six years, YODA became more than a hobby—it became a place to grow. “I was terrified when I started,” Emerson recalls. “But as I got to know the committee, I gained confidence. It was a safe place where I felt supported.”
Emerson’s growth is clear. From feeling unsure, they have now emceed the awards ceremony twice—an opportunity that strengthened both their confidence and public speaking skills. “I never would have emceed that first year. But after getting to know the program and the people, I pushed myself to try. It was a turning point.”
The experience has also broadened Emerson’s perspective. “Reading nominations and hearing people’s stories opened my eyes to how different people live. It’s inspiring.”
Evaluations show that 95% of youth participants, like Emerson, report increased confidence. These skills—like teamwork, leadership, and communication—will support Emerson’s future in school, scholarship applications, and job opportunities.
Reflecting on their YODA experience, Emerson says, “I hope I’ve helped others feel comfortable enough to speak up. I know what it’s like to feel unsure, but it’s important to advocate for your position.”
For Emerson, YODA has been about more than volunteer hours—it has built confidence, skills, and purpose. “If you’re thinking about volunteering, just try it. You never know where it might take you.
