15 Dec Finding a Voice and Making an Impact: One Teen’s Journey with Youth Central
Looking back, Lucy sees how Youth Central has empowered them to create real change.
When Calgary high schooler Lucy first joined Youth Central two years ago, they were eager to get involved in their community, make new connections, and grow as a person. Little did they know, Youth Central would help them do all this and more. Looking back, Lucy sees how Youth Central has empowered them to create real change. “Youth Central gives you the space to take action on the change you want to see, advocate for the issues you are passionate about, and be the person you are working towards,” Lucy shares.
From working at summer camps to engaging with seniors and joining advocacy projects, Youth Central offered a wide range of opportunities that helped Lucy explore new interests and build leadership skills. “Trying something new and stepping out of my comfort zone really sparked my love for what I do,” Lucy explained.
“The organization’s diverse projects—whether environmental, tech-focused, or culinary—ensured there was something for everyone.”
What stood out most to Lucy was Youth Central’s youth-driven approach. “If you have an idea and you pitch it, you don’t just get heard—you lead the project,” they said. This sense of responsibility made Lucy feel valued and motivated, driving their passion for community work.
Among Lucy’s most memorable experiences was receiving a warm hug from a senior after sharing stories about their lives. Another highlight was serving lunch at the Salvation Army, where a man’s heartfelt thanks for a simple meal made Lucy realize the impact of their efforts. “These moments showed me how much difference we can make and strengthened my commitment to helping others,” Lucy noted. Through Youth Central, Lucy has met inspiring peers, gained valuable leadership experience, and found their voice. It’s a place where you give your heart and receive it in return.
“I’m proud to say that I’m creating change and sharing my voice thanks to Youth Central,” Lucy concluded.
