Even though I've only been part of the team for a short time, I've seen how awesome the youth are in Youth Are Awesome (pun intended). Prior to joining, I had still been an active writer by myself, but I didn't always feel like I was being heard. In YAA, there is not only a talented group of writers who support you, but they also bring you fresh new ideas. That's what is central to writing: having new experiences so that you can write about them. If I hadn't joined, I would still be bundled up in my small part of town instead of getting involved with the larger Calgary community. On the first meeting I attended, we got the chance to meet with a writer from the Calgary Herald and I learned a lot from her that I wouldn't otherwise. I find that YAA and Youth Central have the network and connections to really allow youth like myself to explore their passions. Lastly, I've personally had wonderful opportunities to make new friends and learn about what exciting things they're doing in their lives. This is important to me because it eliminates the stigma that teenagers aren't doing anything worthwhile, when in fact there is a lot to celebrate about the work they do. Hearing their stories motivates me to continue pursuing my passion and I'm excited to see where it leads. -Richard, Youth Are Awesome blogger
As soon as I found out about the Mayor’s Youth Council, I was excited to apply. Not only was I excited by the fact that it looks killer on a university application, but I could think of no better way to impact my community and city in a direct, and influential way. I was excited to also meet and work with a group of likeminded, driven youth, to further the impact that youth have on our city and its governance. Personally, the program has benefitted me a number of ways. Not only has it allowed me to gain confidence in working with diverse people, but it has also showed me the importance of volunteering, and giving back to the community. MYC has also provided me with a team of likeminded achievers I can now call friends, and has expanded my view on what I consider public service opportunities. Youth Central is an organization that EVERY kid or teenager in Calgary should be a part of. It’s a service which caters to the junior high and high school student, in that it provides venues for busy students to give back to their community, gain valuable skills and experiences, and work up impressive volunteer hours / committee participations for university applications or resumes! How anyone would choose to not participate in such a wonderful organization boggles my mind! -Kevin, Mayor's Youth Council member
Youth Central has provided me with so many new opportunities and has taught me many skills that I will keep with me for the rest of my life. Through volunteering with Youth Central, I’ve learned a lot about my own strengths and capabilities, as many of the programs provide challenges and opportunities that showcase them. Mayor’s Youth Council has truly been a life changing experience for me. I've met so many new people that have taught me so much, and my time with them has been amazing! MYC is unique, because it is full of leaders. This has provided us with many opportunities to balance our leadership skills with those of others. It teaches you how to scale back and step up when necessary. This is a very important tool that is useful in all aspects of life, and being able to use it in such a unique environment has been a great experience. MYC has really connected me with a diverse range of youth from all around Calgary. Together, we represent all aspects of why Calgary is such a great place to be! The Mayor’s Youth Council has provided all of its members with great opportunities to get involved and take an active role in their community. This has really solidified our sense of responsibility, capability, and our leadership skills. -Carissa, Mayor's Youth Council volunteer
Being on the YODA steering committee for the past two years has been an amazing opportunity; I learned so much about the awesome youth in Calgary, which made us want to put on the best ceremony possible for them! I realized the extent of work that must be put into planning an event, how to work in a group and seeing our suggestions and ideas become reality. -Bryanne, ConocoPhillips Youth of Distinction Awards volunteer
I’ve been a part of Youth Central for quite a while, and I really just can’t get enough! After joining, volunteering quickly became a huge part of my life. It has provided me with such life-changing opportunities and skills, that I know will help me later in life, and I honestly cannot remember what life was like before volunteering. It has become some sort of a second nature; I see it as a choice of either wasting my time away on the computer or going out and striving to make a difference in the world. For me, the choice is simple! Volunteering is so rewarding; I’ve learned so much not only about myself, but also about others who share the same city that I do. I was never really exposed to the many issues and problems that occur in our society until I began volunteering. It has really opened my eyes and made me a more humble person, realizing that not everyone in this world gets equal opportunities, but we can take what we have and use it to make a difference. Youth really can have an impact on society, and Youth Central is an AMAZING organization that has helped me realize this. It sounds cheesy, but I honestly cannot picture my life without Youth Central or volunteering! To all of the middle school or high school students, go out and get involved, once you start volunteering, you’ll never get enough! -Annie, Calgary Youth Foundation, ConocoPhillips Youth of Distinction Awards, and Youth Volunteer Corps volunteer
I really think volunteering is great because it teaches valuable life skills such as selflessness and being generous. Volunteering gave me many opportunities to understand the city I live in and see how helping others can make a difference/impact. I discovered Youth Central by accident. I was looking for volunteering opportunities in Calgary online, as I was looking for activities to get me away from the TV or the Internet. I enjoy volunteering around the city, and since starting I just can’t get enough of it. Something about volunteering at a homeless shelter humbles you. Something about volunteering at charitable and non-profit organization makes you see money isn’t everything. I’ve discovered so much about life and how society works, and how invested and passionate others are in their line of work devoted to helping others is something I never have witness or know of before. I really do love volunteering. I wish more students especially in my school got more involved and exposed to all of these great opportunities. I got to learn so much about how the city functions, like who knew they hired kids to do the mascots at the zoo. I also got to have experiences which I would have never gotten if it wasn’t for Youth Central. -John, Youth Volunteer Corps in Schools Volunteer
Youth Are Awesome has given me the opportunity to meet so many people and explore so much of what Calgary has to offer. It is a brilliant platform for youth to be who they are and prove that we can do something other than goof around. Checking my view counts on blogs, I can draw conclusions as to which articles are most popular amongst the audience and develop my own voice. After writing several articles, I feel like I have finally found a style that is both comfortable for me and will capture readers as well. I always go over the edits that have been made to my blogs after I finish them brings to my attention several common mistakes in writing that I make, and I am slowly learning to correct myself. Having never done an interview of any sort before YAA, my first interview didn’t go as terribly as I’d imagined, largely due to the fact that as I write more I found I could express myself more coherently through speech. Youth Are Awesome has expanded my courage to professionally and politely contact others through email, mostly for requests. I’ve never met such a large group of youth who are able to express themselves so fluidly through writing, and I feel that the energy given off by the committee brings me inspiration. Seeing the innovative and thoughtful articles produced by our members makes me proud to be a part of Youth Are Awesome. I only wish that I’d joined sooner! -Ailin, Youth Are Awesome volunteer
I think Youth Council is very beneficial for Discovering Choices. It helps people know themselves better and become leaders. It is also a way to kind of escape school work and you can be yourself. I also give back to my community by volunteering and I help plan all the school events. I want to continue volunteering because it’s a good way to give back to the community! -Meagan, Outreach/Discovering Choices volunteer
Out of my busy schedule, Youth Central has been the one thing I look forward in doing. To this day I only regret not joining sooner. I had such a blast running YVC as a student leader at my school as well as organizing the ConocoPhillips Youth of Distinction Awards and going through the entire process of putting an event that massive together. Every step of the way I met amazing people that I walk away as life-long friends. Without Youth Central, I wouldn't have realized my love of giving back to the community. Youth Central has been my family through all the love and support they have shown me in the short few years I have been with them through their words of guidance, various references, nominations and awards I have received. -Nazifa, ConocoPhillips Youth of Distinction Awards and Youth Volunteer Corps volunteer
By joining Youth Central, I opened one door and have had the opportunity to open 100 more. I am able to express myself freely in Youth Are Awesome, which allows me to connect with youth all over Canada. Being on the TD Youth Earth Ambassadors allows me put my environmental ideas and initiatives forward to change the world. The Youth Volunteer Corps in Schools provides me with opportunities to engage in projects in my school environment. Youth Central showed me that success is based on action, and the more you act, the more you get out of it. I know that at the end of my journey as a youth I will reflect back on the privileges that I had being a part of Youth Central, and will feel the blues because all that I will think is, ‘it simply wasn't long enough!’ -Anayat, TD Youth Earth Ambassadors, Youth Are Awesome, and Youth Volunteer Corps volunteer
