Water bottle greenhouse is complete!

IMG_8494 smallLast Saturday, June 21, the TD Youth Earth Ambassadors finished constructing a greenhouse made up of over 2,500 plastic water bottles, which are a great alternative to traditional greenhouse plastic used to make them. They took these one-time use water bottles and re-used them to construct something beneficial to the environment and the city.   Ten youth and eight adults spent 150 hours combined building the greenhouse, which is located at Al & Marg’s Garden in the community of Parkdale.   Parkdale residents have big plans for the garden already, and are considering planting tomatoes, melons, strawberries, squash and other plants.   We would like to thank the following contributors to the project:

    • We would like to extend our gratitude to Star Building Materials for generously donating the building materials for the greenhouse!

    • Marklan Bottle Depot, who allowed us to trade our collected bottles that did not fit with 500 ml waterbottles that did.

    • Bob Pritchard, a committee member’s father who helped lead the youth to build the roof and door frames.

    • Jerry, a volunteer from the Parkdale neighbourhood who provided guidance with building the roof and door frames.

    • Audrey Smith, our lead contact in Parkdale. She saw the benefit of the greenhouse to the community and initiated this neighbourhood garden last summer with a group of neighbours who were interested in growing produce.

    • Chris Koper, who volunteers with the West Hillhurst Community Association. She was a great help in finding our contacts to bring this project to life. Our thanks go out to her for connecting us with Audrey, helping secure materials, and always supporting the green initiatives of the TD Youth Earth Ambassadors and Youth Central as a whole.

    • As always, TD for funding this valuable, environmentally conscious program at Youth Central.

If you would like to visit the greenhouse, Al & Marg’s Garden is at 2539 7 Ave NW.
