Volunteer Alumni in Profile: Fatemeh Ramazani

What was your involvement with Youth Central?
I started volunteering with Youth Central in 2011, when I was in Grade 11, at which point I became involved with the Mayor’s Youth Council and Youth Week. As a member of MYC, the biggest project that I had a role in was a research initiative regarding the creation of skate parks in Calgary. This project involved surveying youth in Calgary, conducting literature reviews, and creating an action plan for the creation of skate parks in the city; which was then presented to Mayor Nenshi. Alongside my contributions to MYC, I was also part of the organizing committee for Youth Week Calgary in both 2011 and 2012. As a member of the committee I aided in finding events, sponsors, prizes, and advertising.

What did you learn from being a part of Youth Central?
I feel as if my time with Youth Central not only developed my skills as a leader and member of society, but it was also a time for great personal growth. In interacting with like-minded peers and mentors, I learned and grew a lot as an individual. I learned how to conduct myself in group settings, how to effectively communicate with people across many different groups, and how to be a leader in my community.

Favourite Experience?
One of our goals for advertising Youth Week 2012 was to make a video and have that video hit 1,000 views on YouTube. Our team made an amazing video and spent a lot of time recruiting local celebrities and students to take part. In the back of my mind, I didn’t really think that we would hit the 1,000 view point that we were aiming for, but we did! Now that video is at over 2,000 views. That has got to be one of the best experiences that I had working with Youth Central!

What have you been up to since Youth Central?
After graduating high school, I completed two years of undergrad at the University of Calgary, majoring in Neuroscience. Now, I have moved to Edmonton and I am currently in my first year of medical school at the University of Alberta. Other than school I’ve been trying to keep busy volunteering around the city, working, and getting involved in research.

Would you be willing to have youth from Youth Central who are interested in your field of study contact you if they had more questions about your school, your work, etc…?
Of course! I would love it!

Future Goals?
Currently, my goals for the future include finishing medical school and pursuing a residency program. Other than that, I hope to have an opportunity to work or volunteer with youth oriented organizations, such as Youth Central, and instill the passion for community service and leadership that Youth Central instilled in me.
